The Venus table of the Dresden Codex
Of the four Maya codices that survived the colonial book burnings, the one kept in Dresden is an astronomer's handbook. Its pages 24 and 46 to 50 form the famous Venus table. The Maya had measured what we call the synodic period of Venus — the time between two returns of the planet to the same position relative to the Sun — and rounded it to 584 days (true value: 583.92). The table cuts this cycle up exactly as an observer lives it: 236 days as morning star, 90 days invisible behind the Sun, 250 days as evening star, 8 days invisible in front of the Sun — then it all begins again.
The genius lies in the meshing of calendars: 5 Venus cycles = 2,920 days = 8 years of 365 days. The table covers 65 Venus cycles (104 years), and correction pages allowed it to be periodically "reset" to compensate the small drift of 0.08 day per cycle — so that the accumulated error stayed on the order of a single day across several centuries. That is science in the full sense: measurement, model, correction of the model by observation.
Why such effort? Because Venus was no curiosity: its first morning rising, blazing in the east before dawn, was a dreaded omen, associated with the god the glyphs link to war — several cities dated their offensives on the stations of Venus (the so-called "star war" glyph). To predict Venus was to hold the agenda of power.
Eclipses anticipated, temples aligned
The same codex holds an eclipse table: 11,960 days — that is 405 lunations, and exactly 46 cycles of the sacred 260-day calendar — divided into groups of 177 and 148 days that bracket the windows when an eclipse is possible. The scribes could not know which eclipse would be visible from home, but they knew when to watch — exactly the right epistemology with the means at hand.
On the ground, astronomy is built in stone. At Chichén Itzá, the round tower of El Caracol has windows whose sightlines match the horizon extremes of Venus and equinox sunsets (Anthony Aveni's measurements). At Uaxactún, the E-groups align, from an observation pyramid, the solstice and equinox sunrises over three temples. And every equinox at El Castillo, the north stairway fills with triangles of shadow: the light-serpent of Kukulcán descends the pyramid before thousands of onlookers — an effect computed a thousand years ago.

It was the end of a Long Count b'ak'tun (13.0.0.0.0, December 21, 2012) that fed the modern legend of a "Maya end of the world" — while Maya inscriptions calmly mention dates far beyond. A textbook Vigi-Sky case: the source says something else than the rumor.
The sky as story: Popol Vuh and the Milky Way
The Popol Vuh, the great K'iche' narrative, stages the hero twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque, ballplayers who descend to face the lords of the underworld — a story several scholars read as an astronomical weave, tied to the cycles of Venus and the Sun. In the interpretation developed by Linda Schele and David Freidel, the Three Hearthstones of creation — the hearth every Maya house reproduces — would be the triangle of Alnitak, Saiph and Rigel in Orion, with the nebula M42 as the smoke of its fire; and the Milky Way would be the World Tree raised upright. These are scholarly readings, debated — we present them for what they are: interpretations, not certainties.
How they observed
Maya astronomy is a state profession: the aj k'in, "day keepers", trained in scribal schools, keep the tables. Their instruments: built alignments (El Caracol's windows on the extremes of Venus, the E-groups on solstice sunrises), the crossed sighting sticks — depicted in the codices themselves, two rods crossed to steady the eye on the horizon — and the zenith, observable with no tool at all: twice a year at these latitudes, at noon, an upright stick casts no shadow.
But their true instrument is writing. The codices are data tables: series of observations accumulated over generations, with correction numbers to reset the model when the sky drifts — exactly what a modern astronomer does with residuals. Maya precision does not come from optics: it comes from duration, and from a bureaucracy of time that writes everything down.
What they read in the sky
A layered sky (colonial sources describe thirteen levels), where time itself is divine: each day is a god carrying its burden, and the celestial bodies are powers on the march. Venus at its rising hurls darts — wars were dated on its stations; an eclipse is a bite taken from the Sun, watched for through the risk windows of the eclipse table; the Milky Way carries the world tree. Predicting was not curiosity: it was keeping the gods' agenda — and therefore the agenda of power.
